Two reporters arrested in Turkey released: CBC

Two CBC journalists covering protests in Turkey who were arrested Wednesday have been released.

Sasa Petricic and Derek Stoffel were arrested while covering the protests in Taksim Square in Istanbul.

“#Canada diplomats in #Turkey huge help in getting @DerekStoffelCBC & myself released so quickly. A big thank you!” Petricic tweeted Wednesday night.

“My exclusive ‘tour’ of the Turkish justice system is over! Thanks for all the kind comments! And very big thanks to all at @CBCNews…the Cdn Foreign Affairs dept. and my new Turkish friends for helping expedite my release! It’s late so going to sleep. Night all!” Stoffel tweeted Wednesday night.

Earlier Wednesday, Liberal MP Bob Rae introduced a motion calling for their release that was passed unanimously.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird had spoke to the Turkish ambassador about the detention of Petricic and Stoffel earlier Wednesday.

“Pleased to hear @CBCNews journalists have been released in #Istanbul,” he tweeted Wednesday night.

“Thanks to the Cdn Consul General and the Gov’t of Turkey, including Amb. Babali, for their co-operation in this matter.”

The correspondents were covering ongoing protests against the Turkish government.
