Mayor Ford addresses only budget surplus Thursday at City Hall

TORONTO, Ont. – Mayor Rob Ford held another near-daily news conference at city hall Thursday where he treated things like “business-as-usual” while questions continued about the alleged drug video scandal.

The conference was set to discuss only the city’s budget surplus, even though news of this was discovered two days ago by councillors and reporters alike.

Ford announced Thursday highlighted council’s policy of pumping seventy-five-percent of any surplus into capital costs. Therefore of the $248M surplus, $186M will go into capital and $62M will go towards reserves.

In the address, Ford’s comments sounded more like the opening monologue of a campaign date according to 680News reporter Kevin Misener who was at Thursday’s conference at city hall.

“Under my leadership the City of Toronto has changed it’s financial management strategies we are planning for the future,” Ford said.

Ford’s comments sounded more like a preview of the next mayoral race.

“When I was elected I promised to keep your taxes and reign in out of control spending at city hall.”

The mayor was again asked questions about the alleged drug video scandal, that’s when he abruptly walked away from the podium.

Only one question was asked about the budget surplus, despite the news breaking two days ago.
