Mississauga shark fin by-law repealed by city council this week

Mississauga city council has repealed the decision to dismiss the Shark Fin By-law 0268-2011.

Council’s decision to repeal the by-law stating that this type of by-law does not have a legitimate municipal purpose. A similar by-law enacted by the city of Toronto was dismissed as well.

The by-law prohibiting the possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins or derivative products was approved by Mississauga’s city council members in October 2011 where it later came into effect on June 30, 2012.

Council reaffirmed its concern about illegal and inhumane shark finning practices with the potential of the extinction of several shark species as a result of fin removal for human consumption.
