TORONTO, Ont. – After 42 years, a landmark independent bookstore in the downtown core has shut its doors for good.
The Nicholas Hoare bookstore, located at Front Street East near King Street, closed its doors on April 1, 2013.
The store’s owner, Nicholas Hoare, says the closure is because he will soon turn 70 and is starting to slow down. Hoare is now expected to retire to his farm in Nova Scotia.
Hoare closed his Montreal and Ottawa locations last year because of sharp rent hikes.

I am saddened to hear about the Nicholas Hoare’s bookshop closure. Browsing in the bookshop was a favourite pleasure on a rainy Sunday. I will miss the bookshop with its distinct British charm. Good luck to Mr. Hoare and the staff!
Not to mention pressures of large corperate stores plus ever increasing internet sales.
Its the future and progress, but distressing just the same. Another loss of personal attention in the retail sector
