MARKHAM, Ont. – A 12-year-old boy barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel took his mother’s car for a joyride in a Markham strip mall parking lot Wednesday.

York Regional Police said the mother went into a shop to run an errand, leaving her sons — aged 12 and three — in the car.

She also left the keys behind, police said.

Police said the boy took the car for a spin, circling the lot once and then pulled the car back into its parking spot.

No one was injured and no cars or property were damaged.

It is not clear how long the mother was inside the shop but police said in the 12 minutes between a 911 call from a shopper and police arriving, the joyride was over.
