5 men arrested after bank robbery in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Ont. – Five men have been arrested after what Halton police are calling a “sophisticated break-in” at a Burlington bank.

Halton police recovered $300,000, and thousands of dollars in coins and jewelry.

The alarm at the TD Canada Trust on Fairview Street at Walkers Line went off at 1 a.m. Monday, but when police got there the doors were still locked.

Once police started looking around and brought in the dogs they found the suspects hiding nearby.

Halton police Det. Donna Whitaker said they got into the vault despite an elaborate security system.

“They were able to gain entry through the floor from the second-storey premises, which allowed them access to the area above the vault,” Det. Whitaker said.

All five men will appear for bail hearings on Thursday.

Police also found concrete cutting saws, repelling equipment ladders and an acetylene oxygen tank.

Police also said the degree of sophistication in this particular break-in is “unrivalled.”

The five men — between the ages of 31-48 — are all facing charges of break, enter and commit, and possession of break-in instruments.
