TORONTO – Torontonians renting out a private parking spot at their homes or condominiums are actually breaking the law.
That may come as news to people who go online to advertise parking on Kijiji or Craigslist.
According to the City of Toronto, people who rent out a spot risk a $25,000 fine for an individual’s first offence and $50,000 for a corporation.
The Toronto Star reported that although the law is on the books, staff at the city’s licensing branch can’t remember the last time it was enforced.

I know that I’m a little late to the party here; but a person who rents out their parking stall is essentially running a business, right? So, what happens when the vehicle is damaged on private property? Who’s insurance company pays? What consumer protection do you have as a customer?Heck, if this is the attitude, then why don’t we all just start selling our home-cooking from our driveways and tell Toronto Public Health where to go? Who needs rules?
Only in Canada !! (Rule of law, make law , get culprits, prosecute, send tumbling down their destiny, and we get lawyers and judges living the dream of Canada, rest of us cannot even rent a parking space to pay for one nice meal outing a month) where does this happen , well only in Canada!!
I think this law has to do with protecting Public Parking operators which are paying for the appropriate permits and licenses.
Archaic law that probably dates back to the horse and buggy days. Oral sex is actually illegal too! Why don’t they spend some time combing the books and removing laws that no longer make any sense…..which would be most of them!
Government greed at it’s finest…. Someone actually looked up this law for a reason… Time to change a few laws… If I own a parking spot and I coose to rent it, that is MY business… The ONLY concern the Government should even have is the income reported… To levy a fine is simply just greed.
Dave, I agree with you on most part but I don’t believe the current Government is even aware of this law and that is why it has not be enforced. We cannot just go and blame the current Government for everything in the past. However now that this is in the open they must do something about it. I am sure there are many other outdated laws are in the system and no one knows about it.
The laws need to be updated and delete the useless ones.
What a bunch of nonsense the fine is in excess of the fine for impaired driving.
This appears to be a very outdated law and should be changed. If I have a condo unit I can rent it out so if I have a parking space belong to the same condo I should be able to rent it out the same. I know this law is wrong but why should a single citizen pay for lawyers to challenge this law. The City should automatically look into this and make the correction.
What law, on what books? These even go on the MLS system.
