TORONTO, Ont. – The victim of a house fire in High Park Saturday night had been identified as Toronto District School Board Trustee Irene Atkinson.

Atkinson was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a kitchen-fire broke out at a home in the city’s west end.

The fire happened on High Park Boulevard just after 7 p.m.

Firefighters pulled her from the home and she was rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital where she remains in critical condition.

“(Fire crews) found the victim inside the first floor, dragged her out and started to do first aid and then turned her care over to EMS at the scene,” Dist. Chief Kevin Judge told CityNews.

Another woman was rescued from a third-floor balcony and treated on scene.

In a statement the TDSB said their thoughts are with Atkinson and her family during this difficult time.

There has been no word on the cause of the fire or extent of damage, as firefighters are still investigating.
