Only days after being selected as the next leader of the Catholic church, Pope Francis made the first Sunday window appearance of his papacy to a crowd of more than 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Breaking with tradition, Francis delivered several off-the-cuff remarks about God’s power to forgive, rather than reading from a written speech.

The new pope, who is considered by many to be a people’s pope and supporter of the poor, has so far not shied away from his image as being very approachable.

Francis is the first Latin American pope as well as the first Jesuit.

In somewhat of a surprise, Francis began his first Sunday as pontiff by making an impromptu appearance to the public from side gate of the Vatican.

His appearance and willingness to interact with people startled some passing by and prompted cheers.

Francis will officially be installed as pope on Tuesday.
