TORONTO, Ont. – After approximately 30 hours in the dark, power has been restored for residents living in several high-rise apartments in East York.
Toronto Hydro was forced to shut off power Friday afternoon for repairs to an aging underground switch gear.
“We are currently experiencing an ongoing outage affecting the area of Thorncliffe Park, our crews are on site, estimated time of restoration is late Saturday afternoon,” said a recorded message from Toronto Hydro on Saturday.
Hundreds of residents took to Twitter and called in to 680News to vent their frustration over having to wait so long for the lights and heat to be turned back on.
The outage affected between ten-and-twenty highrise apartment buildings in the area, with some reports indicating more than a thousand people were without power.
Toronto Hydro says customers affected by this power outage can apply to be compensated for any losses suffered.
You can find more information on outages and compensation at the Toronto Hydro website.

30 hours, that`s nothing. A hydro pole fell down in our yard last spring, went without power for 6 days while Hydro fixed it – AND were charged $6000+ because the pole was on our property. So, all those people without hydro for 30hrs, well, try going for a week and then getting charged for it – a lot better than just losing fridge contents.
Nonsense. Aging equipment my arse. 3 unplanned outages in under two months, and what a surprise! -The “aging equipment” happens to be right in the spot where the crews dug up the earth while moving a cross-walk further down the street.
Kevin24 says this was fixed in a timely manner. Funny how I watched these hydro pricks chit-chat and smoke for 13 hours before any real work began. Yea, they had to test properly to find out where the problem was, but why not split up? I assume some union nonsense is holding them up, so send another damn crew.
Even more funny is that the “aging equipment” looked a lot like the new equipment, in condition and filth. Sounds like just more Hydro1 BS. Then again, can you expect anything more from a monopoly?
First of all I don;t work at hydro and Chris this is not Hydro 1 BS this is Toronto Hydro, as for people standing around you have to realize that there are things in place like work protection and other safety issues that has to be considered, then you got to try and find out the problem there may be more then one , why would they just do a temp fix and then have it go again. They cant split up because you can only hook one fault finding machine up ,I understand you have issues with the length of the outage but its expected with the load demand and I know for a fact that the equipment and cables in Toronto are pass its life and hopefully you wont encounter a longer outage next time.
Stay positive and dont be hard on the workers ,they are doing a job yes but they work on getting your power on at all cost .
If this power outage happened in a rich community (eg. The Bridle Path), the problem would be fixed ASAP.
My take on the 30 hour power outage (for Facebook users)

Outages happen, 30 hours is pretty good repair time for switch gear. I laugh when the guy on the radio said he had to throw out everything in the fridge when it’s fridge temerature on the balcony. Quit whinning and be thankful hydro did this in a timely matter.
