The University of Toronto is considering several major changes to its undergraduate teacher-training program.
The Toronto Star Reports OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education), is creating a task force to review options on how to re-shape its teacher education.
OISE currently has a one-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education program for students who already have an degree from an accredited university.
One model the school is considering would see that degree replaced with a two-year graduate program.
Queen’s Park has already announced that all teacher education programs will increase from one to two years starting 2014.

I agree with everyone else, this is just a cash grab nothing else what they really need to do is show students what other jobs they can pursue in education other than teaching and accept less people into the program until there is no longer a surplus. The supply should reflect the demand but since universities are a business they will obviously not want to lose out on the potential money they could be making.
Ridiculous. As it now stands, the one year programme wastes far too much valuable time on pumped up theory courses that could be pruned and revised leaving more time for the subject courses like English, History, and Math. More time could be spent on Practice Teaching where students could acquire valuable guidance from experienced teachers. A two year programme, under the present framework, would just lead to twice as much wasted time.
and the same goes for nursing—too many graduates (RN/RPN) and only casual or temp jobs. time to take a closer look at the “business decisions” colleges and universities are making,
Tram guy’s info is not factual!!!!
Retired teachers are no longer able to supply teach!!!!!
Teacher jobs shortage is caused by too many graduates relative to number of available jobs…this is further aggravated by fact that teacher candidates who don’t get accepted into an Ontario Teacher Education program are permitted to get accredited through Teacher programs in the USA (Buffalo etc) and then apply for jobs in Ontario….depending on who in the School Board they’re connected to determines whether they get jobs or not!!!!! This clearly should not be allowed !!
For sure a cash grab under guise of improvement. Here’s an idea shut it down until the demand calls for it. We got supply for many years. But who we kidding that ain’t gonna happen. Make work soun familiar ?
A two-year degree is a great way to rob young Canadians of time and money. Especially considering the meagre job prospects. If anyone thinking about enrolling teacher’s college is reading this… DON’T DO IT! There are so many more opportunities in other career fields.
One way to encourage the job market is to stop retired teachers from being supply teachers. I was told years ago the only way to get a job with the GTA boards was to get on their supply teaching list. The retired teachers have this clogged up. They need to be excluded and give the jobs to college graduates. The universities need to cut back on the number graduating each year. I am a reitred teacher and my daughter couldn’t catch on with any GTA board thus I KNOW what I am talking about from first hand experience. When I retired, I never went back! A model for all current and prospective retirees.
That’s just fine and dandy for those who can afford to retire!! Maybe if the cost of living ln OAS and CPP was just as good for the regular public as it is for retired teachers that would be ok. Don’t include all retired people in your statement!
The job market for teaching is poor. Who will spend so much money for another 2-year degree course, and has to struggle to find job to pay back the tuition loan?
Training for two years is a cash grab and nothing else. Improve the program within the one year framework or expand concurrent programs for undergrads.
The problem is too many grads for too few jobs. Faculties of Education have referred to the continued surplus as a “business decision”. This too is a cash flow source. 29 year educator
