Stoney Creek woman dies in highway crash in New York State

Two people are dead – including a woman from Stoney Creek – following a fiery, head-on crash on a New York state thruway, early Friday morning.

New York State Police report that around 1 a.m., a man identified as Julian With, 43, from New York State, entered the southbound lanes near Albany, and began driving north, slamming head-on into a minivan. He died at the scene.

The Hamilton Spectator said Carol Dion, 50, of Stoney Creek was in the passenger seat of the minivan and also died at the scene. Meanwhile, the vehicle’s driver, Karen Weller, 39, of Hamilton, and her four-month-old baby were rushed to a hospital in Albany.

A hospital spokeswoman said the baby remains in serious condition. There is no word on the extent of Weller’s injuries.

Police are investigating the crash and what caused With to drive the wrong way.
