Snowmobiler dead after plunging through ice in Muskoka River

LAKE OF BAYS TOWNSHIP, Ont. – A 48-year-old snowmobiler is dead after plunging through the ice in the Muskoka region late Sunday night.

Edward Dehaan of Smithville, Ont., and three other male snowmobilers took a wrong turn while heading back to their cottage from dinner in Lake of Bays Township around 11 p.m., according to provincial police.

The police search and recovery unit pulled Deehan’s body from the water around noon Monday.

Dehaan was the only snowmobiler who did not make it out of the river.

The group were from the Niagara region and unfamiliar with the area, according to police.
