TORONTO, Ont. – Family Day is here, which means many Ontarians will be spending the day enjoying some time off with family and friends.
As usual there are numerous closures, but there are still plenty of things open like malls, tourist locations and some ice rinks and arenas.

- Eaton Centre, Square One, Vaughan Mills and Pacific Mall, as well as Bloor-Yorkville and Yonge Street shopping districts

It is great to get a holiday in February. It is such a long time between New Years Day and Easter otherwise.
this is not a stat holiday.it is provincial not federal.there are many workers who get it off without pay and there are some like my husband who dont get it off and no time and a half.some empolyers give an option of working or not.with or wothout pay.its a stupid holiday.not because its named family day-i love my family but if they were going to create a new holiday they should have made rememberance day a stat holiday.that is what people wanted.insted we get family day.i know many who cant afford a day off without pay.if thery are going to have this a holiday then make it a federal holiday with stat pay for everyone.
I guess some people aren’t happy unless they whine about something. It takes someone “special” to whine about a day off work (that pretty much everyone else appreciates) and then blame it on a politician.
You can all say what you want, I look at it as another paid day off and those that do work have time in lieu or get paid overtime … so quit complaining. As for Sunday shopping it was about time Ontario got out of the stone age .. not everyone is a christian and believes Sunday is a day of rest .. so if you are ..do your thing .. if you are not, do your thing … I prefer diversity over some archaic laws that were written in a different time.
Here is some info: the day is not given by all employers; if you work that day; you do NOT get time and half and you do not get another day off later on. This was not finalised by provincial government. If you want the day off, one has to request the day off; then you do not get paid unless you are taking the day off as lieu for another day(eg, holiday).
Which are the supermarkets that are open?
I am shocked at some of the comments I am reading here. Sour grapes without thinking or fact checking. Sunday shopping was introduced because the majority of retailers and shoppers want it. I personally have been against it all along and do not shop on Sundays or stat holidays. Those that work in retail are often students and part time and welcome the extra hours. More often then not if they want that particular day off they request a change in shift. Some unionized workers did not receive this stat holiday until their next contract was renewed/negotiated. Do what you want with this day (go to work if you want or volunteer). Be grateful you have such choices!
Which supermarkets are open?
I can complain that roses have thorn bushes, or rejoice that thorn bushes have roses. The choices are ours!
Since there are no other holidays between New Years and Easter, why not just accept the opportunity to enjoy a ‘free’ day to relax. People complained that there were never any holidays between New Years and Easter. Now we have a day off in February and people are still complaining!! Does it ever stop?!!
… And Nancy Crouse, I agree with you – EVERYBODY should have the day off on the third Monday in February, not just a chosen few.
Comedian Terry Yonka, I remember when Sundays were the one day a week designated to the family, no one had to work and all the stores were closed.. A lot of people were surprised when the government allowed shopping Sundays.
As with Family Day, some are off and some not. What about Remembrance Day? Do you think it’s fair that some are off and some not!? Either everyone is off or no one has it off.
Good comment Terry Yonka!
Why is it on Family Day when some get the day off and those who really could use the day off are working? Malls are tourist designations? People working in retail get few perks and this looks like a day for those whom already have more days off than they deserve for example, in the executive corporate sector get to have their day off. Big guns get the day off while their minions toil the execs are enjoying the spoils of their bonuses!
Equality is great, isn’t it!?
That’s what every Sunday’s were supposed to be all about a time with family after worship around the dinner table conversing and getting to know you until the world got greedy and the Mulroney Conservative Government created the free trade amendment and Sunday Shopping…”FAMILY DAY…BAH-HUM BUG!!!” :/
Dan and Don I’m so sorry that you guys don’t have family around to spend the day with. I lost my mom in 2000 but still remember Mothers Day by paying tribute to my great mother in law, and this other lady who we met when we were just married she and her late husband are like a second mom and dad to the two of us, I call he mom Eleanor. So have some friends over, get some food on Saturday, and cook up some food and play some cards or something like that. A down day every month is needed these days with the rush rush of our society.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Stop criticizing one another. If you celebrate great. If you don’t that’s your business. Everytime someone bashing anothers comments. 680 news should get rid of comment areas because people are childish grow up.
Great…. I have no family that I deal with anymore.. thanks for another depressive day McGuinty!
Im so glad I have a family that loves me….Happy Family Day Don!
Family are not just biological, if your family is deceased that is a horrible thing to have to go through but can we rejoice in what we have and love our friends like family, Dan, I hope that you have an amazing family day. I have lost too many friends and family and want to rejoice in the ones I have left and be thankful that I have a day to do this.
what an awful holiday for those whose families have deceased
What kind of comment is that? I guess Valentines is an “awful” holiday for those who are single, and that Christmas is an “awful” holiday for those who don’t celebrate it. And let’s not forget how “awful” New Years must be for those who need to find something to complain about New Years.
