Large chunks of Russia meteorite could be worth hundreds of thousands

Meteorite hunters are heading to Russia for what they have called a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity.

Large chunks of the space rock that exploded over central Russia Friday could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to some experts.

Michael Farmer, from meteorhunter.com, says he started planning a trip as soon as the meteor exploded.

“The next morning I was on the phone working on VISAs, I’d like to get a VISA and get over to Russia as quickly as possible, when this type of thing happens hours count,” Farmer said.

Even smaller pieces of the meteorite could be worth thousands once they are located and confirmed.

The rarity of an event like this makes chunks of the meteorite very valuable and sought out by collectors who want a piece of space.
