World Cup snowboard races on Sochi Olympics course cancelled because of warm weather

SOCHI, Russia – Snowboard World Cup races at the Sochi Olympics venue were cancelled because of warm weather on Friday.
Organizers first postponed the parallel slalom races for an hour at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park then cancelled them because of deteriorating snow conditions.
In Thursday’s races, snowboarders struggled on an icy and bumpy course but the snow became more loose on Friday.
“There is always a balance of risk if you run two events on two consecutive days on the same slope because you don’t have that much preparation time,” FIS snowboard race director Uwe Beier said. “But we have proven in the past that this is definitely possible. Here in Sochi, we faced some very warm temperatures right from the beginning which in the end made it impossible to provide a proper World Cup slope.”
Because of a tight time frame in Sochi, there was no space to reschedule parallel slalom at Rosa Khutor.
The next World Cup parallel slalom is scheduled for Feb. 23 on a ramp in downtown Moscow.
Unusually warm weather earlier in the week also forced the cancellation of slopestyle races.
The organizers said time trials for snowboardcross will be held on Saturday with finals scheduled for Sunday.
