TORONTO, Ont. – Two firefighters were hospitalized Thursday night after falling 12 feet while fighting a fire at a house under renovations, the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (TPFFA) confirms.
The two-alarm fire broke out at 536 Silverthorn Ave., near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West.
Heavy smoke hampered visibility and the firefighters fell from an incomplete staircase, resulting in a rare mayday call.
“Both firefighters were transported to Humber Church hospital. They are minor injuries but they are both pretty sore and bruised,” the TPFFA said in a release.
There were no other injuries. Damage to the home is extensive.
“I am thankful that both firefighters will be OK,” said TPFFA president Ed Kennedy.
“We train for these types of situations and this is another example of why that training is critical.”
