WARNING: Video contains graphic footage.
Cabbagetown residents were startled to see a large coyote roaming their neighbourhood Monday night.
As you’ll see in this raw video, Toronto police responded by chasing and shooting the animal. Police confirmed to CityNews that the coyote had later been killed.
Reporter Saphia Khambalia was interviewing an officer about the sighting when they caught another glimpse of the coyote.

So where is the dead coyote?
A saw a cop fire and miss the coyote and close too!!!
another twisted story from the media!!
@Seriously: please change your channel from “Dancing with the Stars” to a wildlife documentary and actually learn something about wildlife. You’ll learn to appreciate it, understand it, and not make such ridiculous statements. Had no fear of people? It didn’t approach anyone, and actually was moving away from the people in the video. Learn how to read the signals in wildlife and we’ll all get along on this earth, rather than being ignorant and wanting to obliterate it.
I’m familiar with this intersection – it is next to the ravine beside the cemetery and farm. The police made the mistake of standing between the coyote and the ravine where it lives, causing it to venture further into the neighbourhood. If they’d approached from the city side, they could have yelled, waved their arms and it would have run back down into the ravine. The police were coming at the non-aggressive animal from all sides – causing confusion. What a waste of a beautiful animal.
To the reader who is worried about it eating babies: that was one healthy coyote, who’s probably been dining well on our obese raccoons in the neighbourhood. They don’t attack humans – only raccoons and, of course, cats whose owners let them roam the streets at night. He was just up looking for a snack, not your baby.
Coyotes don’t eat raccoons. Newsflash!!!!
Reason I know this is because when I go out rabbit hunting in the winter I know trapper who lived nearby the place I hunted and he has disposed of raccoon carcasses out for the wildlife after he removed the raccoon’s pelt for sale and nothing eats them!!! Coyotes might nibble on them come February when they are starving. Coyotes look for quality food: squirrel, rabbit, deer, birds…
Oh please.. if a wild animal WANTS to attack, it WILL! This coyote had absolutely NO want to attack anyone! A useless, senseless killing!
The animal had no fear of people, meaning, a child or pet would be approached by this coyote if it felt threatened, hungry or both! I’m glad it was killed, where would you like them to relocate them? People are silly and clueless… they view this animal as a domestic dog. This animal will turn on a dime and attack….
Reporter Saphia Khambalia says in the video “It doesn’t seem afraid at all”. Are you serious? Have you been a coyote in a past life that no one knows about? Are you trained and recognizing emotions in coyotes? Pathetic statement.
That was definitly NOT an “agressive” animal.
Panic first, and reason later. Or not.
Typical police reaction.
I was watching the news last night when it was all unfolding. It made me ill!!! The coyote showed no aggression, at one point yawned. I could not understand why it wasn’t tranquilized and relocated. Made me very sad to see this animal shot at, chased and ambushed, while just trying to survive.
The police knew it was roaming the area, surely a wildlife officer could have been summoned to the area.
I cannot believe that this poor animal had to lose its life simply because it wandered into a populated area. There was absolutely no evidence of aggressiveness…only fear and disorientation. The Toronto Police should be ashamed of themselves for not showing enough humanity to relocate this poor coyote. Yes it may take a bit more “work” and patience to tranquilize and relocate an animal but surely the cops could spare an hour or two from disseminating traffic tickets to do something truly worthwhile. The quickest and easiest solution is not necessarily the best solution. Shame on Toronto Police!
Who is the real animal here? I think the Police are. They did not need to shoot the coyote, but rather just trap it and relocate it. This video clearly shows that the coyote was showing no threat to anyone, it seem to be confused. This is so sad. Hope the animal activist do something about this incident.
I watched the video and did not see any aggressive behaviour from this animal only from the police! Very sad they could not relocate the coyote instead, he looked confused and lost and in need of help, Im sure he did not want to be there and did not deserve to die as a result.!
Brutal. Why not tranquilize it, and send him to the wilderness? Let me guess… some excuse about public safety. How far is THS from Riverdale area…. not far is the answer.
This was completely unnecessary and barbaric! Coyotes are an important part of the food chain; they keep the rabbit and rodent population down. Why not relocate it? Are the police going to be shooting rabbits and mice next because somone spots one in their neighbourhood? It seems that humans behave more like animals than the animals do.
Awww. Poor little guy.
I have been a loyal 680 news listener for many years. I can not believe you are showing this video. I must say the ride home will seem different as I will be listening to a different station.
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your feedback. We put a warning label on the page, stating that it’s graphic. Please note that the bullet did NOT hit the animal in this video. The coyote was later killed.

The heck, why not just capture it and let it loose in the wild. As much as I agree with safety of humans and family, why kill a confused animal out of its natural environment. Help it out!
