A large coyote spotted in Cabbagetown has been killed, according to Toronto police.
Residents of the downtown community were startled to see a large coyote roaming their neighbourhood on Monday night.
The animal was spotted near Carlton and Sackville streets, east of Parliament, around 9 p.m.
Police arrived in the area just in time to see the coyote run into a ravine near Wellesley Park.
A short pursuit ensued and police fired a warning shot to get the animal to return to the woods however officials say the animal returned to the community and due to its aggressive behavior, the animal was shot and killed on Monday night.
Police say there was not enough time to contact Animal Services.
Toronto Animal Services said coyotes have been more active because of the relatively mild winter, but it’s normal to see them in the city.

Season is open in Southern Ontario for coyote as per MNR regulations: “All Season”
Cops did the right thing!
Mating season is getting under way for the Yotes,
Way too many in Toronto since there is no population control.
You were.
I think the cops had no choice…..they don’t walk around with tranquilizer darts…..what would Marcie say if the “nice innocent” coyote bit her ankle off?
The correct people should’ve been out there WITH the police. Animal control can carry tranquilizer darts – this is an animal control issue – NOT a police issue.
What do you expect from bullies!
Hey BG what’s a cat doing outside in the first place and a dog or child without an adult. So many dogs and children eaten by them everyday right in front of adults…maybe you should do some research.
Last year in Oakville, a girl was attacked by a coyote during the day in her own backyard. Look it up, if you can work Google, then get back to me with your sanctimonious attitude about doing research.
Ask the citizens of Vancouver who’ve had their pets snatched away from them by coyotes whether or not their presence made any difference. Seriously.
We’re invading THEIR territory; if people would stop leaving their garbage outside, stop letting their pets to roam freely and stop feeding the coyotes etc, they wouldn’t be so “tame” to approach. I hope “Quick Draw McGraw” feels good about killing this beautiful animal needlessly and I hope it didn’t have pups like someone mentioned…they are just trying to survive. Also they claim it was “aggressive”…you’d be aggressive too if a bunch of buffoons were chasing you!!! Soon every animal in the world will be extinct because we’re taking over their land…you’ll only be able to see animals in zoos…bravo people…bravo.
I believe we just became Americans; killing everything in site. The coyote was INNOCENT, people! There could be pups who will now die of starvation.
Agreed
And there will now be no people or pets attacked by that wild coyote. Pups?!? Wrong time of year. … Wow, people need to educate themselves.
This has got me very angry, they had other options they could of fired a tranquilizer shot if they really had to take it down. They killed an innocent animal, wow cops are so stupid, clearly don’t know how to handle the situation.
So it could keep coming back, which it was doing? Ignorant.
You really think cops carry around tranquilizer guns? I love wildlife, but if it’s in a residential area and behaving agressively, sorry but kids’ safety wins every time.
Ya it was only acting “aggressively” when the cops chased it, shot at it and surrounded it. Go out citynews website and watch the RAW video of the coyote running around.. completely harmless!
Despite the reports that people had been run at by this coyote? Please. “Completely harmless”. Wow.
The police had no right in shooting and killing the poor animal that was probably out looking for food.
That’s right. They should have left it to attack someone’s cat, dog, or even child. Are you for real?
Ok so next time your dog is running loose we will have the cops shoot it too. Because you know.. it’s “aggressive”.
I guarantee you that if a police officer is charged by a loose dog on the street, it’ll get shot.
Typical ridiculous comments from clueless, Liberal tree huggers of Toronto… Coyotes are large, meat eating animals. They eat a lot of pets and livestock, and would NOT hesitate to eat a human child up to six or seven years of age. Those of you who use handles like ‘sensible’ or ‘concerned’ or ‘kitten’ need to give your heads a shake! A coyote does not belong anywhere near humans and yes it is sad that we have to kill them, but that keeps us on top of the food chain. The only reason these animals are coming near us is because we have quit throwing stones at things that ate us once and would eat us again in a heartbeat.
Just like Mike said, I too saw, a wolf like animal crossing Neilson Rd at 401 on Monday night at approx 10.45pm. It was running fast. Pet owners around the area beware.
They knew this animal was there. Animal control could have removed it safely . There was no need to kill it. Just another case of trigger happpy cops.
Wonder why it could not have been stunned and then returned to the woods. Was it necessary to shoot and kill the animal?
It had been returned once, and had come back. On its return, it was more aggressive and was threatening to attack people. How much more do you want?
Cops need a serious training course on dealing with wild animals. For some reason their first reaction is “shoot to kill”. An article in the star stated that officers surrounded the coyote at which point the animal became aggressive. Well duhhhh.. you can’t surround an animal and expect them to not get annoyed. Why they have to shoot and kill an obvious harmless animal is beyond me? I have not heard ANY reports of the coyote being vicious at all until a bunch of cops decided to surround it! that is mistake number 1 when dealing with wild animals! Coyotes are NOT human attackers unless you do something to piss them off, which is what the cops did! And even then, the coyote didn’t even attack, it simply got pissed off! And now I am too, because the cops shot an innocent animal when all they really had to do was tranquelize and re-locate it!
Actually, I saw a very large (wolfe-looking) animal cross 401 & Neilson rd this morning. I called 311, which in turn was suppose to call animal services. I can tell you this large animal was alive and running. as of 7:55am
Coyotes don’t bother humans. Police just can’t wait to shot their guns!
I was attacked by a coyote in Toronto before so it does happen.
We have small packs of Coyotes in our area and they have followed my dog and I to the mailboxes late at night. Did I call the cops? Or start screaming for it to be killed? Nope, I kept my dog on leash right beside me picked up my mail and went home. Apparently if this were Toronto I would have been in danger of being killed.
You WERE in danger of being attacked and killed, don’t kid yourself. Stop watching lolcat videos and educate yourself.
You must want to use your gun too! You seem to know how to use a computer, do a search on the web and see how many people have been killed by coyotes. Sure it wasn’t a werewolf?
So it’s since been “removed from the streets”. Can we please find out what exactly happened to it? Please don’t tell me they shot it!
We have them all the time; they come down the Beltline Trail and the ravines. Keep the squirrel and Raccoon populations down. Some people need to get a life!
Oh my gosh! A wild animal running on the loose! Run for the hills and make a big deal about it! City folk are such wimps! Whose homes do you think we are taking away when we build all those new developments? Deal with it and don’t ever leave your city or you will go crazy with all the wildlife roaming free in the countryside and Northern Ontario ( north of Barrie really).
“City folk”?? You know, of course, COUNTRY folk have no qualms about shooting wildlife that’s roaming around, right? Not a second thought about a coyote that could go after pets or livestock, for instance. Only CITY FOLK would make an issue about killing an “innocent” animal. They’re laughing at you, not us.
I hope they don’t have to resort to shooting it.
Pharmacy & Steeles, right behind IBM, we have a beautiful big guy that comes around once and a while
And it wasn’t on a collar of a coat?
thought i saw a coyote last night around 1 AM in rosedale… thought i was losing my mind.. guess not
