Ford speaks about TCHC investigation

Mayor Rob Ford spoke Thursday about alleged fraud at Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

The TCHC is investigating word of kickbacks, double billing, and shoddy repairs at community housing. In addition, an auditor general’s report is accusing some city workers of watching pornography on the job, abusing sick leave and taking city vehicles home.

“I think it’s pretty deep, from the stories I’ve heard,” Ford said. “It’s been going on a long time.I think we could have a serious problem on our hands.”

“We might need to clean house,” he said.

Ford spoke while attending Toronto’s Sportsmen’s Show at the Direct Energy Centre Exhibition Place.

Meanwhile, new TCHC CEO Gene Jones said the audit was conducted because of tips of possible misconduct between staff and vendors.

In a news conference Wednesday, Jones said the audit found some holes in the system.

According to Jones, he received complaints from residents and staff and an anonymous tip in late 2012 about “alleged improprieties and wrongdoing involving some staff and vendors who do repairs and maintenance.

This prompted him to hire an outside firm to conduct a review.

At this point, no wrongdoing has been proven and no disciplinary action has been taken.
