TORONTO, Ont. – Commuters will catch a break with GO Transit and Metrolinx offering riders quiet zones and designated parking spots for carpoolers.
GO Transit passengers riding the Barrie line will get a break from the roar of other rider’s earbuds and phone conversations as the transit system tests out quiet zones.
Passengers can go to the top level of every coach on most of the Barrie line trains to find the designated quiet zone, which is marked with signs, according to GO Transit.
Metrolinx is marking carpool week by creating new parking areas designated for carpoolers at GO Stations in Oshawa, Rouge Hill and Mimico.
The expansion hopes to make it easier for commuters to share their ride to work in the GTA and Hamilton areas.
Commuters can get a free carpool parking permit for a GO Transit station by going online to register for a permit.

I have been taking GO Transit for the past 15 yrs and while people talking on their cells phones can be a huge pain.. I don’t agree with taking away a person’s right to speak (even if it is in specific “zones”). It’s common courtesy to lower your voice while on your cell phone (better yet, don’t use it at all) but to take away the right to use your phone at all while on PUBLIC transit? That’s taking it a little too far. If you want a quiet ride to work, drive in the peace and quiet of your own car, otherwise accept that you’re sharing public space with people around you. First someone suggests banning strollers on the TTC and now we’re going to have “quiet time” on the GO Train.. what a socially inept world we are becoming!
It’s a step in the right direction and it’s better than nothing. Be happy and stop complaining.
Why should the elderly, disabled and pregnant women go up one flight of stairs to avoid the rudness of the handfull of people that have no respect while travelling/using public transportation.
Great ideas, but who’s going to enforce them? Trying to enforce common courtesy doesn’t work when there are so many people around who just don’t care. The Loblaws I shop at has spots for hybrid cars, but they are always taken by non-hybrids – can’t be enforced.
