Best Buy will permanently close eight Future Shop and seven Best Buy big box stores today in select cities nationwide.
The cutbacks will cost between 800 and 900 jobs.
Over the next three yeaars, the company plans to open state-of-the-art new Future Shop small-concept web stores and new Best Buy mobile locations across Canada.
The Best Buy stores closing are:
- Queensborough
- Nanaimo
- Victoria
- Langford (Westshore Town Centre)
- South Surrey, British Columbia
- Lachenaie, British Columbia
- Sherbrooke (SmartCentres Sherbrooke), Quebec
The Future Shop stores closing are:
- West Kelowna, British Columbia
- Montreal (Forum Entertainment Center), Quebec
- Laval (First Pro Ste-Dorothee), Quebec
- Winnipeg (Regent), Manitoba
- Calgary (Macleod), Alberta
- Ancaster,
- Barrie South, Ontario
- Mississauga (Erin Mills), Ontario
Cut throat competition from websites and other big box stores may be to blame.
The two companies are wholly owned by Best Buy America.

I wouldn’t be surprised that part of it also has to do with their known high pressure sales tactics and trying to sell those stupid extended warranties. Really? So clearly you don’t have much confidence in the product if you really think I need an extended warranty then!
They have price matching, so buying it cheaper online should’nt be an issue.
USA economy is rebounding a bit and the future looks oil boom and commodity strong for them. Time to ignore us Canadians again, like always when the times are good south of the border.
Not surprising. People visit the store to get help and see the product in person, then buy it on-line cheaper. The internet has been a game changer for this industry and others. It’s been years since I was in a physical book store.
@HeatherFig…really makes no difference, Future Shop is owned by Best Buy
Good riddance. The big box stores are a suburban blight.
That is surprising and BC and Quebec seem to be the hardest hit!! But I won’t miss Future Shop one iota. I much prefer Best Buy who have salaried employees….
