according to witnesses (people on the bus) the driver went through a red light so any “jay walking” comments are unfounded,
Please note, that my comments were directed to LD’s understanding on why jaywalking happens, not in any way meant to presume the specifics of this situation. However, I believe both LD and I and many other people see this as a dangerous area and would like to see changes to make it safer.
This was a horrible tragic accident. She was a lovely, highly intelligent women and will be deeply missed by all of us who have worked with her over the years. Her loss will be felt by many. My heart goes out to her husband and loved ones. The investigation is not yet completed so any comments on how this tragedy transpired are premature and very insensitive.
She worked with my mom. Needless to say they’re all pretty shook up about it. That particular intersection needs to be looked as a dozen other people have been killed there in the last several years.
Peter, LD, you are making political commentary on a woman seriously injured by a bus. You should be ashamed of yourself! Would you like to see these horrific comments if you were in a car accident?
I dont know why anyone would conclude that she was jay walking. The lady was a colleague of mine and I feel terribly for anyone that knew her and her family. I feel terrible for the bus driver as well, as I’m sure she must be feeling terrible.
Sadly, our workplace runs out of parking spots, and as a result many of us have to park on the other side of Eglinton Ave. Im sure this was the case with her and she was probably just making her way back to her car. Very sad..
I have observed the same and come to a different conclusion. If you are pushing a stroller, carrying parcels or sane you should not cross 6-8 lanes of traffic (people cross less than 10m from a light thus adding turning lanes or bus pull outs to their route) on foot when there are lights not all that far apart. I do agree that within the parking lots there needs to be more sidewalks. Even better signage as to where the sidealks are would help. I find after crossing to the store of my destination, I see another route that would have had more sidewalks involved. Of course, if we’re going to build tunnels, I’d like to see some for cars too, which would help ease congestion by eliminating the need for left turns on to or from Eglinton from the shopping plazas.
There are malls, shops and businesses that run the length of Eglinton on both sides from Victoria Park going east almost all the way to Kingston Road. Many people cross this six lane roadway outside of the crosswalks at all times of the day and night. This entire section of shopping was designed to accommodate cars and not pedestrians. And yet….this is where the new crosstown LRT is being put. CITY PLANNERS….please take this into consideration and force the malls to make their spaces pedestrian-friendly…..maybe some easy well-lit overhead or underground walkways can be installed to connect both sides of the street as well as future access to the LRT stations. In the meantime, drivers need to watch for non-delineated crossings. I understand why people jay-walk here….going from light to light and then making ones way through the massive parking lots can add an hour to the shopping trip and it’s just not doable carrying parcels and pushing strollers, or coping with reduced mobility of any sort.
