Legal expert weighs in on Ford’s appeal odds

TORONTO, Ont. – As the clock ticks towards Rob Ford finding out if he’ll have to get out of the mayor’s office, one municipal law expert thinks his worship’s appeal will be successful.

If you base it on the facts, lawyer John Mascarin told 680News the ruling should be upheld and Ford should lose the appeal.

“On a legal technical basis, there wasn’t enough to overturn the decision. My gut is feeling a little more suspicious though and I’m wondering if there’s going to be something to let Rob Ford off the hook,” Mascarin said.

He also added it’s not cut and dry.

“It’s a huge turmoil for the city, a large expense to either run a byelection or do something else. I understand there are those circumstances but the judges shouldn’t be weighing those things, but they’re all human.”

He said the three-judge panel should not be influenced by anything other than the law, however he says they’re human and understand the magnitude of the case.

If Ford loses, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday will take over and council will have 60 days to decide whether to hold a byelection or appoint a replacement.
