TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten says there’s not much she can do to restore peace in public schools until the Liberals choose their new leader at the end of January.
Broten told the Globe and Mail she can’t order teachers to resume overseeing the activities because this is voluntary.
However, one of those involved in the Liberal leadership run, Gerard Kennedy, told 680News he would tear up the imposed teacher contracts if he becomes the next Liberal premier.
“That’s probably going to be what’s necessary. I’m prepared to do what is required,” Kennedy said.
Withholding extracurricular activities is the only legal hammer the teachers have to continue their opposition to Bill 115 and the imposed two-year contract.
The unions for public elementary and high school teachers will meet on Wednesday to discuss their next steps, which could include a day of protest.
