Several politicians, including Mayor Ford, to host New Year’s Day levees

TORONTO, Ont. – It appears Mayor Rob Ford has decided to host Tuesday’s New Year’s Day Levee at City Hall after all.

Earlier this month Ford’s office said the event would either be cancelled or modified into something family-friendly like a family-skating party.

Ford now says he plans to meet with members of the public at city hall between 2 and 4 p.m.

The mayor will not speak with reporters at the event, however, his office said.

Mayor Ford is not the only publicly-elected official with New Year’s Day plans.

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion will host a levee at the Civic Centre.

That levee will involve free pizza and skating on the Celebration Square ice rink. Even the nearly 92-year-old McCallion will be strapping on some skates and hitting the ice.

Brampton’s Susan Fennell, meanwhile, will greet the public at the Rose Theatre from noon until 3 p.m.

Lieutenant Governor David Onley will hold his New Year’s levee at his suite at Queen’s Park beginning at noon.

The levee tradition in Toronto dates back to 1968.
