SIU closes investigation of East Gwillimbury collision involving two York officers

EAST GWILLIMBURY, Ont. – The Special Investigations Unit is no longer probing the circumstances of an East Gwillimbury collision that sent two York region police officers to hospital Thursday.

A staff sergeant and constable sustained injuries after a collision with a pickup truck near Mt. Albert Road, just west of Kennedy Road.

“The passenger in the police vehicle and the driver of the pickup truck did not sustain serious injuries,” said SIU Director Ian Scott in a statement.

“Given the unit’s mandate, which is limited to serious injuries and deaths that may have resulted from criminal offences committed by police officers, there is nothing further to investigate.”

The SIU says the 26-year-old pickup truck driver apparently crossed over the centre line and the vehicles collided head on.

Sgt. Kelly Bachoo and Const. Andy Pattenden were airlifted to two Toronto hospitals Thursday evening. The pickup driver suffered minor injuries.

Sgt. Bachoo, the driver of the vehicle, was taken to hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Const. Pattenden was taken to Sunnybrook hospital, but later released after his injuries were deemed not to be serious.
