Man dies in downtown condo fire near Richmond and Sherbourne

TORONTO, Ont. – A 42-year-old man is dead after a fire broke out at a downtown condo early Friday morning.

Fire crews rushed to the blaze in a unit on the sixth floor of 255 Richmond St. E., near George Street., just before 4:30 a.m.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.

Residents were evacuated from the sixth floor and transferred to a TTC bus.

The fire was put out quickly.

Toronto Fire division commander Bob O’Halloran says the fire is not suspicious.

The fire did not spread to other units, however, some units sustained slight water damage, according to O’Halloran.

The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called to investigate the cause of the fire.

Damage is estimated to be between $50,000 to $100,000.
