Snow shoveling technique may prevent injuries

TORONTO, Ont. – Health experts are advising people to take the proper precautions while removing snow.

According to CityLine’s health and fitness expert, Stephanie Joanne, shoveling snow puts a lot of strain on the body.

“Realize that you will be working out so if you are feeling tired or if you are feeling a little bit light-headed, definitely don’t be working through any pain,” she advised.

“If you’re back is sore don’t finish it because the job has to get done, because it’s just going to cause yourself that much more injury.”

“Warming up is number one. So you want to make sure you aren’t going out there on a mission and just going for it,” Joanne urged when heading outside to clear the drive or walkway.

Using the correct technique may also prevent injuries.

“You want to make sure you aren’t having a bent back. You want to make sure you aren’t doing too much torque and twisting to your spine,” Joanne said.
