York Region elementary teachers stage 1-day strike

TORONTO, Ont. – The latest round of rotating one-day strikes by Ontario’s public elementary school teachers hit the Greater Toronto Area Thursday, with 5,100 educators at the York Region District School Board walking off the job.

They are protesting legislation that allows the province to impose a contract on them and prevent them from striking. The province has decided to allow the walkouts as long as they only last one day at a time.

York Region’s teachers picketed outside the school board headquarters in Aurora. Hundreds of people marched in a line carrying red signs and wearing red placards that read, “respect our collective bargaining rights.”

Teachers at the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (Muskoka, Haliburton) and Renfrew District School Board (Pembroke, Petawawa) also staged a strike Thursday.

On Wednesday, teachers in Ottawa-Carleton, Lakehead in Thunder Bay, and Hastings-Prince Edward staged a walkout.

Teachers in Simcoe County, Kawartha Pine Ridge near Peterborough and Upper Grand around Guelph will walk out Friday.

School boards in Halton and Durham region will also experience one-day strikes like this one before the Christmas break but no exact dates have been announced.

On Thursday, the Toronto District School Board confirmed that its elementary school teachers will stage a one-day strike next Tuesday.
