Toronto byelection could cost $9M: Report

TORONTO, Ont. – If Mayor Rob Ford is forced from office and a byelection is called to replace him, it could cost more than originally thought.

According to a Toronto Star report, the price tag has jumped to a projected $9-million from an estimated $7-million.

City staff told the budget committee Thursday that the extra cost comes from rebating campaign donations.

In the 2010 election, the city handed out $2.4-million in rebates to campaign contributors.

Ford’s appeal will be heard on Jan. 7.
