Canadian aerospace and transportation giant Bombardier has continued an impressive recent streak of orders, after securing an order for up to 70 CRJ900 NextGen regional jets from Delta Air Lines.

Delta has placed a firm order for 40 aircraft, with options for 30 more planes to be purchased.

The 40 jets are valued at $1.85 billion, and if the remainder of the jets are purchased the deal could be worth a total of $3.29 billion.

The planes for Delta will be configured to hold 76 seats in a two-class cabin.

Many analysts expected Bombardier to win the Delta contract as the two companies have a long relationship and Delta has the world’s largest fleet of CRJ planes.

Delta president Ed Bastien said his company selected the CRJ900 NextGen jets because they were a proven, cost-efficient aircraft with an ideal size.

Bombardier Class B shares jumped up 2 per cent in early trading following the announcement, but the stock is still slightly down for the year.
