Toronto unofficially breaks temperature record for Dec. 4

TORONTO, Ont. – We’ve unofficially topped a temperature record for December 4, after temperatures hit 16.7 C at Pearson Airport Tuesday morning.

The previous record was 15.9 C, set back in 1998.

Tuesday’s predicted high was 12 C, but CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor said the mercury climbed well past that because the fog burned off much earlier than expected.

“When you’ve got the fog, the temperature doesn’t move very much, but we quickly got into that southwest wind, and it really pushed our temperature past the forecast high of 12,” explained CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor.

However, the temperature did not stay at the record high for very long, dropping continuously through Tuesday afternoon.

Taylor said there is a small chance a thunderstorm will hit the GTA sometime before the day is over.

It’s expected to be more seasonal by Wednesday, with a drop to the freezing mark overnight and a daytime high of 2 C.

Several temperature records in the GTA have been snapped this year as relatively warm weather has been widespread across much of southern Ontario.

In addition, the GTA experienced several warm days in December 2011. December 4 was 10 C, December 15 was 13.8 C and Christmas Day was a balmy 5.6 C.

The normal high for this time of year is 3 C.

Because Tuesday’s weather guarantee was 12 C, a lucky 680News Insider Club member will win $6,100. That winner will be announced during Wednesday’s morning show at 7:21 a.m.
