Winter will be colder than last year, according to the winter weather outlook by Environment Canada, but still milder than a normal winter.

The Toronto area will not feel winter’s wrath but it will be a jolt after last year’s mild temperatures.

Environment Canada issued its winter weather outlook that calls for warmer-than-normal temperatures.

“It’s not going to be a brutal kind of winter,” Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips said. “We think the flavour of it will be milder than normal with more snow than last year.”

The Toronto area can expect a “milder-than-normal winter,” he said.

But this year, winter will feel worse than the winter that was “cancelled” last year, according to the agency.

“It’s not going to be another winter that we cancel,” Phillips said. “Last year, we cancelled winter.”

“Toronto had the least amount of snow ever, the warmest winter on record,” he said.

Phillips said this year, winter will start earlier and last longer.

“There will be days that you wish you were somewhere else,” he said.

Phillips said precipitation levels are trickier to predict but said the agency expects that it will be normal but perhaps, “a little bit wetter than we normally would see.”

Winter begins Dec. 21.

“People who like winter, hey, they’re not going to be disappointed,” Phillips said.

“And those who are not big fans of winter, well, hey, it won’t be the winter of your youth.”
