Maclean’s magazine has selected Queen Elizabeth II and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as “Newsmakers of 2012.”
Both are in the spotlight for very different reasons.
Maclean’s managing editor Kim Honey said the Queen made the top of the list because of the Diamond Jubilee — celebrating 60 years on the throne — and the London 2012 opening ceremony.
When it comes to Zuckerberg, it’s been a year of controversy for him.
“Everyone rushed in — they thought it was going to perhaps even turn around the ailing American economy, and then that didn’t happen. Then he pocketed personally $1-billion on the deal; people were turned off a little bit,” Honey said.
Other contenders for the “Newsmaker of the Year” title included: U.S. President Barack Obama and the Higgs boson particle, known as the “God particle” — a key to understanding the universe that had long eluded scientists.
