Late Nov. worst time of year for pedestrian accidents

TORONTO, Ont. – The last 10 days of November are reportedly the worst of the year for pedestrian accidents.

Police said they do see a rise in pedestrian incidents in late November mainly because of the time-shift since the morning and afternoon rush hours begin in the dark.

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe with Traffic Services said at this time of year, both drivers and pedestrians need to be extremely cautious.

“You need to cross at the pedestrian crossovers or intersections that are set up for crossing. You need to do what you were told when you were a child: stop, look, listen and think before crossing the roadway,” Const. Stibbe said.

So far in 2012, 20 pedestrians have died after struck by vehicles on Toronto roads, compared to 15 fatalities in 2011.

The latest incident happened Tuesday evening. A 42-year-old man died after he was hit by two civilian vehicles on Midland Avenue and Kilcullen Castle Gate, near McNicoll Avenue.

This was the second fatal hit and run in less than a week.
