Blue Jays to hire DeMarlo Hale as bench coach: reports

After allegedly being interviewed and making the short-list for Blue Jays’ manager back when John Farrell was hired, it appears DeMarlo Hale will be coming to the Jays anyway.

Reports indicate the Jays have hired Hale as their bench coach, joining John Gibbons as part of the revamped Jays coaching staff.

Hale, who was the third-base coach for the Baltimore Orioles last year, had previously served as a coach in Boston’s system. He is respected around baseball as a solid analyst as well as someone who is good with the players.

“He’s got a great reputation around the game, a good leader and good coach, a pretty clever guy in terms of using analytics in setting up defences and things like that,” said Sportsnet baseball columnist Shi Davidi.

While it has not been officially confirmed by the Blue Jays, multiple reports indicate that Hale will indeed be signing a three-year contract.

Other Blue Jays’ coaches from last year, including hitting coach Dwayne Murphy and pitching coach Bruce Walton, have not yet signed contracts and it is not clear if they will be signed or if Gibbons will decide to go in other directions with his coaches.

Some have suggested that Gibbons may want to bring back his former pitching coach Brad Arnsberg or former hitting coach Mickey Brantley.
