Toronto needs to do better job handling parking tickets: Ombudsman

TORONTO, Ont. – The city’s ombudsman believes Toronto needs to do a better job handling parking ticket disputes.

Fiona Crean’s latest report shows drivers are getting reasonable service, but it’s much easier to pay the ticket than fight it.

Crean told thestar.com that the tickets lack a balance of information.

The flaws, such as lack of information on tickets, downplays options to take the ticket to court.

The report also said drivers are left unaware that there are options to have tickets cancelled, rather than having to fight the ticket in court.

Close to 3-million tickets were issued in 2011, with a total worth of approximately $80-million. About 138,000 of them were cancelled for various reasons.

Crean’s report made a number of recommendations, and a city spokesman said they will be implemented by the end of 2013.
