The Toronto District School Board is holding a meeting tonight for trustees to discuss selling parts of 127 school playgrounds.

In many cases the school yards would end up being half their current size.

Schools up for debate are in North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. The province stopped providing money towards TDSB’s renovation budget after several projects went over budget.

The board needs to raise at least 100-million dollars to pay for renovations.

TDSB Chair Chris Spence knows parents will not like the idea but he tells City News they are in a tough spot.

“We don’t have a lot of options.” Spence said. “We need to insure that our revenue goes up and our costs go down. In terms of our capital projects, and we have a $50 million dollar deficit that we have to eliminate before we can get to our capital project.” So you have two options: You can sever land or you can sell properties.”

Recently North Toronto Collegiate sold part of its land to fund 52-million dollars in renovations.
