TORONTO, Ont. – Police are investigating the vandalism of a war memorial on Remembrance Day as a hate crime.

The Victory Peace memorial in Coronation Park, near Lake Shore Boulevard and Strachan Avenue, was defaced with the words “Canada will burn praise Allah” in what appeared to be black marker shortly after Remembrance Day ceremonies.

A passerby in the park Sunday noticed the vandalism and reported it.

City workers were called in to clean the memorial.

The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations said it condemns the vandalism, calling it “senseless” and “ignorant.”

“We call on witnesses to step forward to assist police in finding the perpetrators of this sacrilege. Both Islam and Canada’s proud heritage are denigrated by this ignorant act,” executive director Ihsaan Gardee said.

Police said they do not have any suspects.

Police were initially investigating the incident as a mischief, but are now investigating it as a hate crime. The suspect will face a greater penalty if convicted.
