WINNIPEG – Winnipeg residents are being offered a bribe of sorts to avoid littering.
For the next four weeks, workers for a downtown business group will be handing out five-dollar gift cards for a local coffee shop to people they see putting garbage in a trash can.
Smokers can also win the prize for using cigarette butt disposal containers instead of the sidewalk.
Jason Syvixay, (suh-VIX’-ay), spokesman for the Downtown Biz, says the group decided to take a different approach from the normal anti-litter campaigns that amount to scolding people.
He says the group decided on a more positive approach aimed at encouraging people to keep the streets clean.
