TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto retailers may be given a six-month grace period to phase in the plastic bag ban.
The ban is set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2012, but the way the by-law is drafted, fines for violations wouldn’t be imposed until the end of June.
The grace period would mean businesses couldn’t claim they didn’t have enough time to prepare for the ban on single-use plastic carry-out shopping bags. This could be a way to avoid threatened legal action.
Mayor Rob Ford has promised to keep fighting what he calls an outright “stupid” decision.
Meanwhile, the Reverse the Bag coalition is applauding a new poll, which shows two out of three Torontonians are opposed to the ban. The survey of about 5,000 residents was conducted on September 20.
