TORONTO, Ont. – The city’s economic development committee will debate Thursday whether stores in Toronto should be allowed to open on statutory holidays.
The committee will discuss a proposal to allow businesses to open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the following holidays: Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving Day.
Currently, only stores in tourist-designated areas and of a certain type and size are allowed to open on statutory holidays. However, stores that are forced to close complained about an uneven playing field.
A subcommittee met with businesses and employees in Sept. 2011 and recommended allowing stores to open on Victoria Day.
City council votes on the issue on Nov. 27.
