York Regional Police are asking for the public’s help after a dog was found with a branding mark and several other injuries in Aurora, Sunday afternoon.

Constable Netashia McLellan received a 911 call about the animal, who was found emaciated and suffering under a tree on Offord Cres. The dog was taken to a Richmond Hill animal clinic, where he was found to be suffering from head injuries.

The branding mark on his back came from a chemical and reads 191 on both sides of his body. His head injuries have also caused him to go blind in one eye. Branding is a common practice with hunting dogs, but investigators are unsure if it’s the case with this dog.

The OSPCA’s Brad Dewar told 680News there are several ways of branding an animal, including “bleach, chemicals, spraypaint, and there’s also freeze branding.”

Dewar labeled the case as suspicious, but it’s unclear whether the animal was abused.

“We are dealing with a dog that obviously someone has owned him or does own him,” he said.

The investigation is being conducted by York Police officers as well as OSPCA staff, who are currently taking care of the dog and say they’re surprised by how quickly he’s bounced back.

“The day he was brought to the vet clinic, it was uncertain at that time if he would make it through the night, and he has made such a huge recovery. We foresee him making a full recovery,” Dewar said.

Anyone with information is being asked to come forward by calling the OSPCA at 1-888-668-7722, ext. 392.
