MPP Glen Murray announces candidacy for Ontario Liberal leadership

The Ontario Liberal leadership race got its first official candidate Sunday, when Toronto-Centre MPP Glen Murray announced his intentions to run.

Speaking at a conference at Maple Leaf Gardens, Murray thanked voters for giving him the opportunity to serve, saying he now hoped to win the leadership.

“I am the first candidate to throw my name into the ring, and for today at least, that means I am the front-runner,” Murray joked at the conference.

Murray said he would cut taxes, provide no-money down university and college education and help renew the Liberal Party with strong ideas and energy.

Murray stepped down Saturday from his role as the province’s Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Murray, who served as the mayor of Winnipeg from 1998 to 2004, was elected to the Ontario legislature in a 2010 byelection.

He was re-elected in 2011 and given the cabinet post in the Liberals’ minority government.

The other contender for the job is former municipal-affairs minister Kathleen Wynne, who gave up her cabinet post earlier this week.

She is expected to formally announce her intentions to run on Monday, according to Premiere Dalton McGuinty.
