TORONTO, Ont. – Phony health inspectors are trying to dupe Toronto restaurants into purchasing a pricey first-aid kit, the city’s public health department warned.
The fraudsters are calling or approaching restaurants and telling them they must buy a $300 kit.
“If you are contacted by someone claiming to be a Toronto Public Health inspector attempting to schedule an inspection, asking for personal information or selling first-aid kits, contact your local police department,” Jim Chan, food safety manager with Toronto Public Health said.
“Legitimate public health inspectors do not call ahead to schedule inspections. In most cases, inspections are unannounced.”
Public health inspectors do not sell first aid kits, the department said.
The department received several calls about the scam in the past week.
Restaurant operators can contact Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600 to verify the identity of an inspector.
