KINGSTON, Jamaica – At least two people were killed in the wrath of Hurricane Sandy on Wednesday as it ripped through Jamaica on a path that would take it on to Cuba and possibly Florida and the Bahamas.
An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his house. Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a river.
In some southern towns in Jamaica, electricity was knocked out. And a few crocodiles caught in floodwaters were carried to districts with the lights out, according to local residents.
Although Toronto is far from the path of Sandy, CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the city could feel the impact of the hurricane.
“We’ve got to keep an eye on Sandy because it could potentially become quite a rain, especially a wind-maker, out from Halloween,” she said.
“In fact, all of next week we could be impacted by the rain and wind from this system.”
“Both Canadian and U.S. forecasters will keep an eye on Sandy for the potential development into quite the potent storm that could veer back into the U.S. east coast and eventually into toward southern Quebec and parts of Ontario as well.”
Earlier Wednesday, Canada issued a travel warning for Jamaica. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said Canadians should avoid non-essential travel to the country.
If you are flying to the area, check ahead as flights are being affected.
