MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – A 14-hour police standoff in Mississauga, Ont., involving a man armed with a sword, is over.
Peel Regional Police told 680News the man jumped out of a second-story window of a home on Manzanillo Cresent, located near Brittania Road and Ninth Line, at around 12:40 a.m. and ran off. He was caught around an hour later.
The suspect is being evaluated by doctors, and police said after that’s over, they’ll decide on possible charges.
Officers were called to the house after a woman reported an angry man was waving a sword and walking in and out of the house. He man had barricaded himself since 10:45 a.m. Monday.
Members of Peel police’s tactical unit immediately took up positions around the house and continued to monitor the situation Monday evening, at times peering in through the back door window.
At one point, the suspect entered the backyard. An attempt to arrest him failed, after he refused to drop the sword and ran back into the home.
A witness told 680News he observed officers tossing a smoke grenade and firing rubber bullets at the suspect, who he said was holding what appeared to be a Samurai sword.
“There was a loud, huge loud bang with the smoke spread up at the side of the house. Our guess here was that it was tear gas,” he said, adding that officers entered the home before immediately retreating.
“At one point, they rushed out of the house and one officer kept firing more rubber bullets back in and was yelling ‘stand down! Stand down! Stand down!”
Peel police Const. George Tudos told 680News the tactics would not physically harm the suspect.
“They could have been anything from a distraction device to a spray that was deployed, or even some other kind of non-lethal plastic projectiles which were utilized,” he explained.
There are no reports of injuries, and officers say he is not an immediate threat to anyone. He is alone inside the home. They plan to stick with their tactics, take their time and try to negotiate and open a line of dialogue with the man.
Portable toilets have been brought in for the tactical officers who are expected to remain there throughout the night.
