TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Transit Commission is one step closer to providing cell service to passengers waiting on subway platforms.
On Monday, TTC officials told thestar.com they expect cell service to be available in most stations in approximately two years.
Councillors are scheduled to vote on a deal, Wednesday, under which Broadcast Australia PTY will pay the TTC $25-million over 20 years, in order to equip the 61 underground stations with the service.
The contract also provides the TTC with $8,000 per station to re-evaluate changes which need to be made in order to support the service.
The TTC hopes this will help to provide riders with up-to-date travel information on issues such as delays and closures, which are currently inaccessible on mobile devices while inside underground stations.
