TORONTO, Ont. – A man was taken to hospital after his vehicle smashed through the window of a furniture store on King Street west of Berkeley Street on Friday.
The crash happened at about 12:15 p.m.
The victim’s injuries are serious but are not considered to be life-threatening.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was the only person seriously hurt.
An elderly pedestrian was nearly struck by the Volkswagen as it veered toward the storefront, but three men were able to pull him out of the way in time, witnesses told 680News.
Police said the Volkswagen was travelling eastbound on King Street when it made a U-turn in front of a van and was struck.
The car was wedged on the van’s grill and the unconscious driver had his foot on the gas so the tires continued to spin, witness Anton Hart told 680News.
The car broke loose and then sped toward an elderly pedestrian on the sidewalk, he said.
“In the meantime, three guys carried a guy who was in a walker, carried him away and out of danger,” Hart said.
“Those guys are heroes whoever they are.”
Another witness, Jennifer, said seconds later the car slammed through the window of a furniture store.
At first, bystanders were afraid to help the driver.
“A lot of smoke came out of the car from the bottom so no one got too close for a second and then it stopped so they kind of rushed and checked if he was OK,” she told 680News.
